Yep, I’m at it again.
First the S’moreos, and now these. I’ve got s’mores on the brain!
Really, though, can’t s’mores be a fall staple, too?
I vote yes.
They’re perfect to warm you up on a cool fall night while you hover over a bonfire. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty sure those toasted marshmallows might taste even better when it’s cooler out. I’ll test that theory and report back. :)
So since we’re transitioning with the seasons, let’s make Caramel Apple S’mores!
These are nothing like the original marshmallow-chocolate-honey graham masterpiece. These just taste more like autumn. Instead of honey graham crackers, they start with cinnamon grahams, and then they’re layered with fresh apple slices (any kind will do), caramel marshmallows (I used Kraft’s Jet-Puffed Caramel and Vanilla Swirl Marshmallows), and a handful of Kraft Caramel Bits.
If you don’t have the caramel bits (They’re available at Target, on Amazon, and at most grocery stores), you can use square wrapped caramels, homemade caramel sauce, caramel ice cream topping…heck, you could probably use caramel ice cream if that’s what you’ve got on hand! Any of those would probably taste great. Use anything caramel-flavored and get creative!
I did. After layering in the caramel pieces, I dug through the pantry and found some Twix. So I added those too!
I liked the results.
Then I took out the apples altogether and made plain Twix s’mores, with a little extra caramel sauce smeared on the bottom. Another s’more I didn’t hate.
I also tried adding Heath bars alongside the caramel marshmallows and apple slices. Although I love Heath, they’re not ideal for s’mores since they don’t really melt. If you’re into the crunch factor, though, give them a try!
What other flavors can you come up with? If you’re in need of inspiration, try adding Rolos, Snickers, or Milky Ways. If you’re like me, you’ll probably have a bunch of these waiting around the house for trick-or-treaters soon, anyway. I’d love to hear any other ideas you try!
Check back on Friday for more of my favorite apple treats…these s’mores are putting me in the mood for apples and I hereby declare this to be Apple Week on Get Sweet Smart!
- 2 cinnamon graham cracker rectangles, split in half
- 4 caramel-vanilla marshmallows
- 1 Tbsp. Kraft Bits
- 1 small apple, sliced
- Skewer marshmallows on s'more sticks or long utensils and toast over a flame or until golden brown. Alternatively, toast under a broiler.
- For each s'more, layer two toasted marshmallows between two graham cracker squares with half the apple slices and half the caramel bits. Press caramel pieces into warm marshmallows to help them melt best.
